Yearly Astrology Forecast: How to Read the Year Ahead

A yearly astrology forecast reads how your birth chart will be triggered over the next twelve months. Three techniques are used together: the solar return, which gives the theme of the year from one birthday to the next; annual profections, which show which planet rules the year based on your age; and a transit calendar, which lists the dates when the slow planets will touch your chart. One gives the subject of the year, one its ruler, one its timing.

Solar return: the theme of the year

Every year the Sun returns to the exact degree it occupied on the day you were born. The chart cast for the exact moment of that return is called the solar return, and it describes the year running from that birthday to the next.

The rising sign of the solar return chart gives the general mood of the year, and the house the Sun falls in shows the area where you will spend the most energy. With the Sun in the 10th house, career comes forward; in the 7th, partnerships; in the 4th, home and family. The city the chart is cast for also changes the result, because houses are calculated by location.

Profections: the ruler of the year

Annual profection is a simple but powerful technique from the Hellenistic period. Each age corresponds to a house: the year you were born is the 1st house, age one the 2nd, age twelve the 1st again, and the cycle repeats every twelve years. The house your age falls on is the subject of that year, and the planet ruling that house's sign is the ruler of the year.

The ruler of the year stands out all year long. Every transit to that planet, the house it occupies in your birth chart and the aspects it makes are felt more strongly than usual that year. That is why profections tell you which transits to pay attention to first.

Transit calendar: the timing of the year

Transits are the aspects the planets' current positions make to points in your birth chart. In a yearly forecast the main focus is the slow-moving planets: Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and the lunar Nodes. Because these planets stay in contact with a point for months, they define the major periods you actually feel in your life.

A transit calendar lists these contacts month by month with their exact dates. A retrograde planet can touch the same point three times: once going forward, once moving back, and once going forward again. These three dates often describe a matter beginning, being reviewed and being resolved.

Reading all three together

On their own, the techniques are incomplete. The solar return gives the subject of the year but not its timing. Transits give timing but do not say which ones matter that year. Profections connect the two: a transit touching the ruler of the year outweighs the others.

In addition, zodiacal releasing divides life into longer chapters and marks peak periods with dates. The lunar return applies the same logic on a monthly scale: each time the Moon returns to its birth position, it gives the emotional agenda for the month ahead.

Yearly forecasting in FalAstry

Each of these techniques runs as a separate tool in FalAstry, and all are calculated from real ephemeris data. The transit calendar lists the heavy transits of the next twelve months with dates; the solar return, profections, lunar return and zodiacal releasing each have their own pages.

The easiest order for putting all three together is to find the ruler of the year with profections first, then read the theme of the year with the solar return, and finally see the timing with the transit calendar.

Frequently asked questions

When should I look at my solar return?

Close to your birthday, because the chart describes the year from one birthday to the next. Looked at before your birthday it gives the theme of the year ahead; after it, the theme of the year you are in.

How is the ruler of the year found?

Find the house your age falls on; the cycle repeats every twelve years. The planet ruling that house's sign is the ruler of the year. The profections tool calculates this from your birth chart automatically.

Which transits matter?

The transits of the slow planets: Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and the lunar Nodes. Fast planets pass in a few days; slow planets last for months and define the major periods you feel in your life.

Is a yearly forecast a definite prediction?

No. It shows which matters come forward in which period; it does not state events with certainty. Your decisions and the circumstances shape the outcome.
